Smart Green & Growing Awards for 2010

Recognition Categories and Criteria
- Greenbuilding This award honors successful and cost-effective projects that implement greenbuilding technologies, reduce environmental impacts by making optimal use of site location, building orientation, building size, and building materials.
- Government Innovation This award is presented to a local government that demonstrates innovative methods that best manage growth and protect Maryland’s natural resources. Projects should demonstrate inter-jurisdictional cooperation and the application of the principles of Smart Growth to strengthen existing communities save fiscal resources and protect the environment.
- Community Activism and Achievement Will be presented to a group or individual from Maryland who has demonstrated personal or professional commitment to making Smart Growth a reality in Maryland. Applications should demonstrate how the principles of Smart Growth were/are applied and the degree to which the goals of Maryland’s Smart Growth program are successfully realized.
- Development & Redevelopment / Revitalization This award honors commercial or residential projects undertaken in older, established communities. Projects recognized will successfully add new vitality to neighborhoods and urban centers through re-use of existing structures or new construction. Successful projects incorporate transit oriented development, smart housing choice, natural resource protection, and economic development.
- Excellence in Agricultural Stewardship Award This award honors long-term, sustained agricultural stewardship and resource protection contributions to future sustainability of Maryland’s agricultural industry.
- Buy Local Agricultural Challenge Award This award honors an individual, organization, company, institution or government entity that has shown leadership and taken actions that increase the sale/purchase and consumption of Maryland-grown,-caught, or –processed products and raised awareness about the economic, environmental, public health, and community benefits of buying local farm products.
- Youth Education and Awareness This award honors efforts to increase citizen involvement in land-use decision-making processes and awareness of Smart Growth and Neighborhood Conservation principles. Activities and projects that raise citizens’ awareness of how growth, development, and land-use issues affect Maryland’s environment and our quality of life will be considered.
- School Siting/Construction/Renovation State and local governments to provide quality public schools and facilities in Maryland’s existing neighborhoods. Projects may include renovation of existing schools or new construction projects that are centrally located, walkable and bikeable, well integrated into the surrounding community, employ green building techniques, and support community use of school facilities and other important features.
- Natural Resource Protection This award recognizes projects that relieve development pressure on Maryland’s natural resources. Ideal projects could will use innovate techniques to preserve open space, farmland or critical habitat preservation. Projects may also restore important habitat or be a development site that successfully incorporates green spaces and natural areas into a community.
- Economic Development and Job Creation This award honors business practices and economic development projects that demonstrate support for Smart Growth by contributing to the economic revitalization of older communities and commercial districts.
- Smart Moves This award recognizes local jurisdictions, developers, community organizations, and other entities or projects that promote use of transportation alternatives, transit-oriented development (TOD), or otherwise expand transportation choices for Marylanders.
- Sustainable Infrastructure/ Innovation in Stormwater Management This award recognizes groups, organizations, county and municipal governments, and projects that have developed or employed new approaches to address the impact of stormwater runoff pollution on Maryland’s streams and watersheds.
