Implementing Green Building Principles
- Several State offices are located within Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold or Silver designations, including Montgomery Park in Baltimore City which features: a green Alpine vegetation roof; high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems; storm water re-use; interior and exterior construction from recycled materials; energy-efficient windows and lighting, and; gearless, high-speed elevators.
- Starting in FY 2009, most capital projects are being designed for LEED certification.
- All new State leases require LEED Silver designations.
- Participation in the State of Maryland Green Building Council
- In the competitive rating and ranking process to secure State funding for affordable rental housing, significant scoring emphasis is placed on green building practices.
- Launched the Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center at the Port of Baltimore, which has been designated as a near-zero, net-energy building. The environmental education center also cleaned up a contaminated portion of Baltimores Harbor and now provides an educational center for local children and a wildlife habitat for native Chesapeake Bay flora and fauna.
